The municipality of Simonswald is located in the Simonswälder valley north-east of Freiburg. The Simonswälder valley winds from the entrance to the valley to the 1,150 metre high Brend mountain (with a lookout tower) and almost up to Kandel Mountain (1,241 m). It is framed by the huge mountains of the southern Black Forest. The Wilde Gutach river becomes a real mountain torrent at the rear part of the valley towards Gütenbach and St. Märgen.
The Simonswälder valley can be explored in a variety of ways, including the sign-posted circular hiking trails, mountain bike tours, the marked Nordic walking routes, canoeing on the Wilde Gutach and climbing.
