Map: Overview of the motorways and major federal roads
Description
The main motorways for traveling to the Black Forest are the A 5 (Karlsruhe–Basel) and the A 81 (Stuttgart–Singen), known as the "Lake Constance Motorway."
The A 5 runs north-south through the Rhine Valley along the western edge of the Black Forest, while the A 81 runs along the eastern edge. To the north, the A 8 (Karlsruhe–Stuttgart–Munich) runs in an east-west direction. These motorways allow you to reach the Black Forest from any direction.
From there, various federal, state, district, and local connecting roads will lead you to your specific destination within the Black Forest.
Major federal roads in the Black Forest
West-East connections
- The B 28—running from Kehl via Freudenstadt to Horb am Neckar (or the Rottenburg junction on the A 81)—crosses the Northern Black Forest. A steep ascent must be tackled between Bad Griesbach and Freudenstadt.

- The B 34 runs along the High Rhine from Weil am Rhein to Waldshut-Tiengen, with an extension via Schaffhausen (Switzerland) leading back to the A 81.
North-South connections
