Description
Since 1891, the Friedrichsturm tower has crowned the highest point in the Baden-Baden area: the Badener Höhe, standing at 1,002.5 meters. Over the past 130-plus years, it has become one of the region's most popular excursion destinations—and for good reason, as the Badener Höhe is more than just a topographical high point.
On a clear day, hikers atop the tower can enjoy a magnificent view stretching across the vast forest landscape of the Northern Black Forest and over the Rhine Plain to the Vosges Mountains. Following an extensive renovation carried out by the Baden-Baden Black Forest Association (Schwarzwaldverein) with the help of numerous donations, the tower reopened to the public in May 2003.
The Badener Höhe can be incorporated into various local hikes; the famous Westweg long-distance trail also crosses the mountain. The shortest route on foot starts at the parking lot by the former Kurhaus Sand on the Black Forest High Road (Schwarzwaldhochstraße); from there, it is a 3.5-kilometer walk to the observation tower.
