Description
Calw is one of 17 towns along the regional section of the German Half-Timbered House Road in southern Germany, which runs from Mosbach in the Neckar Valley to Haslach in the Black Forest. A series of impressive half-timbered houses—located on the market square, along Lederstraße, and in the steep, winding alleys—still conveys the character of the medieval town today.
More than 200 buildings dating from the late 17th century are listed as heritage sites. The town's layout dates back to the 13th and 14th centuries, as rebuilding after successive town fires consistently took place on the same original foundations and cellars.
The Speßhardt district is the area most shaped by tourism; it is renowned for its idyllic setting in the sweeping meadow valley of the Rötelbach stream.
