The capital of Baden is known as the 'Fächerstadt', the fan-shaped city, on account of its layout. The city centre was built to a plan when the city was founded in 1715. The tower of Karlsruhe Palace in the Schlossgarten park is at the centre. As a large city with almost 300,000 inhabitants, Karlsruhe offers an extensive range of cultural activities, including theatres, museums, concerts and cabaret.
